CELEBRATING OUR 35th anniversary

Another piece of magic from the author of Bubbles & Gondola
ABELARD
Leaves his comfort zone for a coup de coeur

Last year, NBM’s ComicsLit very successfully presented a new talent from France with the luminescent and quietly inspiring Bubbles & Gondola. Besides two Eisner nominations, witness the press:
"The wild imagery, wandering through parties and dreamland alike, transports the reader in an emotional way that propels the practical mind into the escape of art."
-Publishers Weekly starred review
"A delightful and well-executed story... fresh, quirky perspective."
- Library Journal
"Dillies' art evokes the work of an earlier poetic penman, George (Krazy Kat) Herriman, though with a trace more detailed elegance."
-The Seattle Post Intelligencer

This fall, ComicsLit promptly follows up with another masterful graphic novel by him and writer Régis Hautière, Abelard. This is the bittersweet story of a little bird who has lived a very simple life in the country and who becomes love struck with a beautiful passing bird. This encounter moves him so deeply as to want to catch the moon for her. When he hears they’ve invented flying machines in America that might give him the possibility to do this, he hits the road for the first time in his life. His travel is filled with dangers and ruthless people, his only defense a grumpy bear who begrudgingly takes to him even as he has to feel sorry for such an innocent meeting the big hard world.
Innocence meeting hard reality is what this story is all about and it’s another poignant work by a superlative young artist.
A few years ago, Renaud Dillies graduated the prestigious comic art school Saint Luc and promptly developed his chops at the leading kids’ comics magazine Spirou also doing best-selling spoof graphic novels on sports such as soccer or rugby for another publisher. Hautière is a friend and regular collaborator.
